I watched Nancy Pelosi cry on 60 Minutes when she was being interviewed by Lesley Stohl about the siege of the Capitol building on January 6th. For whatever you think about Nancy Pelosi who has served in the House of Representatives since 1986 and who is the current Speaker of the House of Representatives, her tears were my tears. Heavily armed rioters ransacking House and Senate offices beating back Capitol police with the pole of an American flag and even a crutch, a mob ultimately causing the death of up to five people, images of violence and hate, a blackboard wipe-out of history classes about the three branches of U.S. government, checks and balances, the symbol of a white dome always there in the background, the defilement, the same feeling I had after 9/11, each time there is more violence, it reshapes the world into its own ugly image, an uncontrollable beast on the rampage waving Trump’s Big Lie, his campaign to convince people that the election was stolen, a cocked and loaded rhetorical gun, Senators acting as handmaidens propagating that lie; rioters returning to hotel lobbies to drink beer and to celebrate, the casual acceptance of white supremacy, demonstrators who can’t handle changes toward representation that includes people of color, a caricature of patriots who have made this one of the saddest days in our country’s history. I cry, I cry, I cry.
